Fascinating! Enjoyed reading this analysis. So interesting on the email list, which every “how to sell books” book recommends for indie authors. I had a similar experience. I have a pretty hefty email list, which I haven’t yet moved to Substack and still email separately about my novel stuff, but it doesn’t convert to book sales. Not sure why.

My open rate is 50-60% which I understand is higher than average, but they open the emails and don’t click on the links/books.

Another problem is that my mailer lite emails go to people’s forum, updates, or promo tabs...

That open rate is fantastic! Mine hovers around 30 which is pretty good. But no matter the rate, the conversion rate for fiction sales is less consistent. Nonfiction authors generally have more predictability with newsletter conversion for some reason

Maybe people read the emails on their phones but make purchases on their computers or in the case of ebooks on their Kindles? I really have no idea. Or maybe my copy just isn’t convincing for sales. I am more of a continual blogger than a marketer...
